Surf Beaches Mobile Coverage Grants Program

Page last updated: Thursday, 15 December 2022 - 10:05am

Following the fatal shark attack near Cull Island in Esperance, the Department initiated work to identify popular surf beaches that would benefit from enhanced mobile coverage which would assist first responders in their search operations and for the benefit of the local community generally.

The Department has worked with the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) and other stakeholders and identified 18 popular surf beach locations throughout the State requiring improvements in mobile coverage.

Applications for State Government funding - now closed

Up to $1 million in funding is available from the State’s Regional Telecommunications Project for the Surf Beaches Mobile Coverage Grants Program (Program) to help improve mobile coverage for popular surf beaches.

Applications for State funding for the Program opened on Monday 24 October 2022 and are now closed.

The Program will prioritise proposals that provide the widest coverage for the priority areas with fit-for-purpose and innovative mobile technologies. Although there are 18 sites that require improved mobile coverage, proposals may include solutions that could cover multiple sites (e.g. one small cell solution can address several sites instead of a ‘one solution to one site’).

Applications were submitted via the SmartyGrant portal.

Applications will be assessed by an independent assessment panel against the eligibility and assessable criteria and submitted to the Minister for Regional Development for approval.

Further details are available from the Program Guidelines or email agtech@dpird.wa.gov.au or by contacting the Department at 08 6552 2119 or 08 6552 1949.

The closing date for applications under this Program was 5 December 2022 at 5.00pm (AWST)
