MySoil is a simple tool to identify soil types. Growers can use soil identification to improve soil management and reduce the impact of soil constraints.

MySoil summarises thousands of soils into 15 broad soil types. Each broad soil type has similar characteristics and management requirements. The information is a starting point for estimating yield potential and for managing soil constraints to improve crop production.

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development provides this information to help growers achieve yields that are more profitable.

MySoil diagnostic tool

To diagnose your soil type, select the coloured Ag Soil Zone that best matches your location, by clicking on the map or legend.

You will be taken to the soil key, which will show:

  • on the left hand side, the selected soil zone
  • on the right hand side, the corresponding soil types.

To find your closest soil match:

  • Scan the soil types on the right hand side to see if one matches your soil, and then click the soil-type icon to see the soil detail. If this describes your soil, click on any of the listed constraints to be taken to a management page.
  • As an alteranative, you can select soil characteristics (such as surface texture, dominant soil colour and pH properties) from drop down boxes beneath the selected soil zone. Choosing from the drop lists will gradually narrow down the possible soil type. From this narrowed-down list, click the most likely soil-type icon to see the soil detail. If this describes your soil, click on any of the listed constraints to be taken to a management page.

The detailed soil type pages provide information on distribution, soil profile image and photograph, distinguishing features, constraints and references.
