My role in the department
Jean is a plant pathologist who specialises in epidemiology. Her work on cereal, oilseed and pulse diseases aligns closely withthat of the DPIRD modelling team to deliver decision support tools for Australian grain growers. As national leader of the disease epidemiology, modelling and delivery of management decision support tools project, she works with internal and external stakeholders to ensure DPIRD's RD&E delivers the outputs required by industry.
My background
Jean has more than 30 years’ experience. She spent 10 years in Africa testing fungicides, and developing and extending integrated disease and pest management strategies on a range of crops. Jean has been with the department for over 20 years, conducting epidemiology research on yellow spot of wheat, net blotches of barley, sclerotinia of canola, and ascochyta and botrytis diseases of pulses. Her work has contributed to the development and extension of disease models such as Blackspot Manager’, BlacklegCM, SclerotinaCM and YellowSpotWM. Since 2015, she has lead the GRDC-funded national modelling projects.
Projects
- National Project Leader, ‘Disease epidemiology, modelling and delivery of management decision support tools’ DAW2112-002RTX - a national GRDC project led by DPIRD.
- ‘Program 1: Towards effective genetic and sustainable management of Ascochyta blight of chickpea – Ascochyta blight pathogen biology, population dynamics and epidemiology’ - a GRDC project led by Griffith University.
- ‘Disease spore identification’ – a DPIRD Royalties for Regions project aimed at improved monitoring of airborne fungal spores as part of an early warning system for endemic pathogens in WA grains crops.
