Young people in the South West were inspired to pursue a career in science and agriculture by the Growing Science Forum, held in Manjimup today. (Friday, 15 August)

The Forum, held as a prelude to National Science Week, was an initiative of the Shire of Manjimup’s Southern Forests Science Extension Education Development program (SEED).

Shire of Manjimup President, Councillor Wade DeCampo, said the Forum received a great response and was a successful initiative of the SEED program.

The SEED program is part of the Agriculture Expansion Project, supported by Royalties for Regions SuperTowns funding and the Department of Agriculture and Food.

"The event was a great opportunity to support the aim of the SEED program, to improve the profile of careers in agriculture and foster relationships between industry and education providers," Cr DeCampo said.

"It is an important component of the Agricultural Expansion Project, which aims to boost employment, production and growth opportunities for both the community and future generations."

Celebrity scientist Dr Karl Kruszelnicki delighted Forum attendees with stories about great moments in science, from the weather to DNA, to how science is changing in the 21st century.

The audience also enjoyed ‘Naked Scientist’, Dr Chris Smith’s entertaining explanations about the role of science in everyday life.

A highlight of the event was a panel discussion about science in agriculture with local leaders in agriculture – dubbed ‘Agvocates’ – including agriculture consultant Paul Omodei junior and Kathy Dawson from the Warren Catchments Council.

DAFWA Executive Director Irrigated Agriculture said the Growing Science Forum was a great way for industry leaders to pass on their passion for agriculture and science to the next generation.

"It is important to demonstrate to young people how rewarding a career in science and agriculture is and that there are a myriad of career opportunities and prospects available," Mr Hill said.

"The department is committed to supporting these initiatives as it works with the Shire and other partners to, together, build a strong, sustainable future for the community."
