Visitors to the Balingup Small Farm Field Day on 20 April can meet specialists from the Department of Agriculture and Food at its display focused on Small Farms: A Family Experience.
Officers from the department’s Small Landholder Information Service (SLIS) will be on hand to discuss how to make the most of a small property, with free advice and information on managing orchards, livestock and small business.
Department South West regional manager Neil Guise said the event provided a unique opportunity for landholders, growers and other interested people to access the latest agriculture and food information.
“Visitors can sign up to receive the department publication South West AgMemo or the SLIS e-newsletter detailing coming events and vital seasonal and land management information,” Mr Guise said.
“Department district veterinary officer Tom De Ridder will be available throughout the day to answer questions on livestock and small animal health.
“Information will also be available about what people need to do if they want to own livestock and traceability requirements under the National Livestock Identification System.”
Mr Guise said small farms could provide an opportunity for families to establish a small business together.
“The department’s Fresh Food Link program will showcase some members who have developed successful agrifood businesses with great local products,” he said.
“Visitors can register for the Small Landholder Information Service. Each registration will go into the draw to win a fruit tree or a basket of products from Fresh Food Link businesses.”
There is also a dedicated activities corner where children are invited to test their knowledge of eggs to win prizes.
“This is just a sample of the information and activities available from the department stand at the field day on 20 April,” Mr Guise said.
“I encourage everyone to stop in at the department display, have a chat and let us show you how we can support your success.”
The Department of Agriculture and Food display is located on Olive Grove at the Balingup Small Farm Field Day.
