The Department of Agriculture and Food in conjunction with Fruit West will promote a range of information and activities for small landholders, horticulturists and the local Hills community at the Karragullen Expo.

Department temperate fruit project manager Diana Fisher said the department, Fruit West and AgroFresh had joined together to present key information on common horticultural issues to Expo visitors.

“The department display will include Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly) insects and traps and visitors will be able to discuss Medfly management with a biosecurity officer,” Ms Fisher said.

“The display will showcase breeding developments in apples and developments in table and wine grapes.

“Expo visitors can discuss the latest innovations in temperate fruit breeding with a fruit breeder or colleague at the department display.

“Information from the department’s Small Landholders Information Service will also be available.”

Ms Fisher said the Expo was a fantastic opportunity for department staff to engage with visitors and promote its role and activities within the local community.

Fruit West Executive Manager Graham McAlpine said Fruit West staff would be on hand to discuss their activities with the local community and industry members who attended.

Mr McAlpine said Fruit West would continue sponsoring the Best Small Exhibit Award at the Expo this year and was also sponsoring the Karragullen Expo ‘I love WA Fruit’ colouring-in competition.

Peter Vedeniapine, of AgroFresh, will also be on hand to talk to industry people on SmartFresh.

The department and Fruit West will be located at Site 31 at the Karragullen Expo on Saturday 12 October 2013.
