He completed his PhD in 2013 at Zhejiang University, China, and continued his research on barley salinity tolerance as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same university.

He joined Murdoch University in 2016 and has developed a barley genome editing platform for commercial breeding, and recently joined DPIRD to implement genome editing technology in other crops, including wheat, lupin and Leucaena to improve the key agronomic traits.
