The Soil and Land Conservation Council (SLCC) undertakes public consultations to help it understand the views and draw upon the expertise of stakeholders and interested parties.  The consultations are undertaken in transparent and accountable processes.

Preparing a Western Australian Soil Health Strategy

The Western Australian Government recognises that our farmers, pastoralists, and land managers are striving for profitable and sustainable agricultural systems, and that our agricultural, horticultural, and pastoral sectors share responsibility for addressing threats to their productive agricultural soils.

The Minister has given the Soil and Land Conservation Council (SLCC) the responsibility for overseeing the preparation and implementation of a Soil Health Strategy for Western Australia.

The SLCC, in collaboration with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD), is preparing the strategy in two stages:

  • Stage 1 – Release of a SLCC Soil Health Discussion Paper with the purpose of engaging with a broad range of stakeholders to determine focus goals and principles for the Strategy and to highlight possible  key actions (Completed May 2020).
  • Stage 2 – Release a Soil Health Strategy Draft for wider consultation, then make revisions based on input from stakeholders and the public before releasing the final strategy.

In May 2020 the SLCC released the Western Australian Soil Health Strategy Discussion Paper, with the purpose of engaging stakeholders to determine goals and principles and priorities for key actions. The feedback received is summarised in the Stakeholder Engagement Report report. The SLCC thanks all who provided their time, experience and expertise during the stakeholder engagement process which concluded in August 2020. Their contributions have significantly shaped the development of the Western Australian Soil Health Strategy.

Feedback on the strategy draft 2020

The SLCC invites feedback from stakeholders about the Western Australian Soil Health Strategy Draft 2020. The public consultation period closes at 5pm Friday, 19 March 2021.

The Western Australian Soil Health Strategy Draft 2020 was prepared using input from over 400 contributions, received across a range of agricultural and environmental sectors and backgrounds.

Receiving community feedback about the draft strategy is important for finalising its development. The SLCC and DPIRD are keen to receive your comments about the draft strategy, in particular, the focus goals and key actions.

To enable this you can:

  • Learn more about the draft Strategy by viewing the recording of our webinar held on Wednesday 27 January 2021. A transcript of the webinar and panel question and answer session is also available to download.

  • provide direct input by completing the online survey

Feedback received will be incorporated into the final Strategy, to be released in 2021.
