Western Australian wines and spirits are attracting attention in Hong Kong, with six local companies awarded at the International Wine and Spirit Competition.
The awards were announced at the Hong Kong Trade and Development Council’s International Wine and Spirits Fair last week.
Department of Agriculture and Food Director General Rob Delane, who attended the event, said it was a highly-respected competition in Asia.
“Western Australia produces top quality wines and spirits that are increasingly commanding attention from our international markets, including Hong Kong,” Mr Delane said.
The awards focused on products suited to Asian taste preferences, including categories for Asian food and wine pairings.
Boyup Brook-based Dickinson Estate earned a range of medals, including gold and a trophy for its Dickinson Late Harvest 2014 in the food matching category, matched with Hainan chicken.
Australian Distilling, of Henley Brook, collected a range of medals including gold for its 18+27 Gin.
Wilyabrup-based Amelia Park was awarded a gold medal for its 2013 Chardonnay.
Other medal winners included Great Southern Distilling Company, Evans & Tate and Burch Family Wines.
The competition forms part of the Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Fair, which featured 13 Western Australian companies. The trade fair is reported to have attracted 1000 exhibitors.
Mr Delane said the department supported companies that showed at the trade fair, giving them the opportunity to showcase their product to buyers from 75 countries who attended the event.
“This is an example of the work the department is undertaking through the Hong Kong focused ‘WA2HK initiative’ to support companies to open up new markets for the State’s outstanding home-grown produce,” Mr Delane said.
While in Hong Kong, Mr Delane signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Hong Kong Trade and Development Council (HKTDC) to promote economic growth and business development, and enhance trade promotion.
