My role in the department

Chris leads the Soil Science & Crop Nutrition portfolio in developing ways to overcome soil constraints to plant growth and maximising the efficiency of water and nutrient use by crops. His team conducts research in the laboratory, glasshouse and field to understand the interactions and test the effectiveness of new strategies to overcome the physical, chemical and biological limitations.

The portfolio vision is to maximise productivity towards the true rain limited potential by improving the soil condition by removing soil constraints and maintaining the benefits through further good management.

My background

Chris has 40 years’ experience working in WA agriculture, with 30 years at DPIRD and a further 11 years at UWA working on many aspects related to soil. Chris has developed and been involved with a range of programs including ‘Time to Lime’, bioeconomic modelling supporting liming strategies, the State Lime Strategy and broader research projects to improve soil management and crop productivity.

Projects

  • DAW1901-006RTX - Increased farming system profitability and longevity of benefits following soil amelioration (Managed by Wayne Parker)
  • DAW1902-003RTX - Reengineering soils to improve the access of crop root systems to water and nutrients stored in the subsoils (Managed by Gaus Azam)
  • DAW1902-001RTX - Increased grower profitability on soils with sodicity and transient salinity in the eastern grain belt of the Western Region (Managed by David Hall)
  • UOQ2204-010RTX - Predicting Nitrogen Cycling and Losses in Australian cropping systems - augmenting measurements to enhance modelling (Managed by Craig Scanlan)
