Improving production systems to increase the value and profitability of the WA cattle and beef industry is the focus of a field day and forum to be held in Broome later this month.

The second Northern Beef Futures industry forum will be held at the Mangrove Hotel on Tuesday 17 November 2015, followed by a field day at Roebuck Plains Station on 18 November.

Guest speaker is well known consultant and beef production vet, Dr Ian Braithwaite, who will provide information on opportunities to improve herd productivity, following presentations by Northern Beef Futures on recent work to support industry to develop integrated supply chains, attract investment and establish and expand export markets.

NBF Broome Operations Manager Andrew Negline said that Dr Braithwaite specialises in sustainable whole herd systems, which includes the financial, management and beef production aspects of the business.

A presentation will also be made by the Department of Lands on land tenure pathways for irrigated agriculture, as part of the Water for Food royalties for regions project.

At the field day, Dr Braithwaite will highlight opportunities to improve cattle production, including covering topics such as grazing management, understanding breeder and herd dynamics and other innovative techniques.

The field day concludes with a session on marketing livestock online, presented by Ms Anna Speer, CEO of AuctionsPlus, sponsored by the Kimberley Cattlemen’s Association at the Northern Beef Development Centre in Broome.

A specific workshop targeting Indigenous producers and stakeholders will also be conducted by Dr Braithwaite on 18 November at Roebuck Plains Station as part of the Northern Beef Futures project.

The forum, field day and workshop are open to all pastoralists, members of the beef supply chain and other interested people.
