The development and spread of recombinant strains of Potato virus Y has become an enormous threat to seed potato industries worldwide. These recombinant strains have been the subject of much research in many countries, and in the USA in particular. They have now reached all continents including Australia. They are spreading in South Australia and Victoria threatening seed potato production there, but have not yet been found in WA. We are fortunate to have the biggest world authority on this virus (Dr Alexander Karasev, University of Idaho) visiting WA from the 16th to the 24th September. He will be giving a presentation on the problem, and solutions to it, at the Potato Growers Workshop.
