Citrus canker: Industry information

The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has taken action to protect Western Australia’s citrus growers from the threat of citrus canker. This follows confirmation that the disease has been detected on three premises in the State's north, linked to plants imported from the Northern Territory.

WA Citrus and the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development are working closely together to provide support and information to citrus growers within Western Australia.

Movement of fruit out of Control Areas

The movement restrictions in the Restricted Areas and Control Areas also apply to growers.

The department has worked with a small number of commercial citrus growers in the Kununurra area and the national Subcommittee on Domestic Quarantine and Market Access to enable movement of fruit outside the Control Areas while mitigating the risk of spread. To assist with this process, the department is waiving inspection fees for affected growers until 30 June 2019.

The procedure allowing for the movement of commercially produced citrus fruit within the Control Area to outside of the Quarantine Area has now been implemented and growers have been able to harvest and move fruit to markets in Perth.

The procedure ensures that all fruit moved out of a citrus canker Control Area has been produced and harvested from a property that is registered as inspected free from citrus canker. Registration also ensures the citrus has undergone appropriate treatment and facilitates trace back should issues be identified with this citrus product.

There has been no detection of the disease in commercial orchards. There are no domestic movement controls preventing the entry of citrus grown outside the Quarantine Areas from Western Australia into other jurisdictions.
