Small hive beetles (SHB) have been discovered in an apiary of 60 hives that had been in Kununurra undertaking pollination services.
Further surveillance to determine possible spread of the SHB is being conducted. Beekeepers are requested to check their hives and trap any beetles found. Beekeepers who find suspect beetles must report them immediately to the Department of Agriculture and Food’s Pest and Disease Information Service on Freecall 1800 084 881.
Beetles should then be sent to the Department of Agriculture and Food’s Animal Health Laboratories for identification.

Following some simple biosecurity rules when handling hives will assist in preventing the spread of pests and diseases within and between apiaries.
An information session on what the beetle looks like and how you can check your beehives for this pest is planned for 7 December. Details will be advertised on this page and through your beekeeper organisation.
