Program
This year there are some changes to the format of the day. Along with key note speakers there will be the choice of three professional development sessions, farmer case studies and update snapshots in video format.
Keynote presentation: How New Zealand saved their sheep industry
By increasing the productivity of each animal the NZ sheep industry survived a 40% reduction in sheep numbers without reducing the overall supply of meat. Dr Peter Fennessy, from AbacusBio in New Zealand, will outline the processes that the New Zealand sheep industry went through to bring its industry back from the brink.
Panel discussion: Can WA have a sustainable sheep industry using Merinos?
This will be an interactive session that everyone can get involved in. Hear producers and industry members, from both the meat and wool sectors, offer their vision of a sustainable sheep industry and how we will get there. A facilitated discussion will follow where the audience can pose questions to the panellists or other audience members. Throughout the session the audience will be able to express their collective view of whether the answer the answer is ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.
Turning reproductive potential in to reality
Jason Trompf, from JT Agri-source in Victoria will outline for us how marking percentage can be improved through careful management of lambs from conception through to weaning. This isn’t just theory, as a WA producer shows how he improved his system, and profit!
Professional development sessions
You will be able to choose two of three professional development sessions to gain valuable skills for your own use and to share with clients.
Getting more lambs
Following on from Jason’s presentation, this workshop runs you through the key principles and processes to improve sheep marking percentage.
How to develop an easy-care sheep system
Want to know the best place to invest in to improve a sheep system? This session will lead you through the principles of making that decision. The session includes information on improving genetics for easy-care sheep and you will also hear how a producer implemented the principles on his property.
Strategies and financial assistance for rebuilding flocks
Taking into consideration the current economic environment, agricultural economists will explore the financial implications of changing flock structure and flock condition, getting in to shedding sheep or even just getting back in to sheep! There is something for everyone in this workshop.
Research update snapshots
This year, the research updates will be presented in a way designed to engage the audience. Videos and powerpoint shows will be available for viewing throughout the day, with a selection being presented in the main theatre.
Sundowner
Networking is a valuable benefit of attending an industry event such as this. Stick around at the end of the day and relax and enjoy the company of your industry colleagues with a glass and a canapé.
Invitation to submit a video presentation or Power Point Show on your latest work
Here’s your chance to get your new research or technology to your audience in a creative and attractive way. Send us a three to four minute PowerPoint Show or video presentation highlighting the findings and significance of your work and we’ll make it available to the delegates of the conference. Qualifying videos will be televised in the meals area and a selection will be played to the audience in the main theatre, giving the presenter an opportunity to answer questions from the audience at the viewing.

Accommodation in Perth
We recommend that you book your accommodation as soon as registering to attend the conference. Please remember that Perth is usually very tight for accommodation. You might like to choose your accommodation based on availability of public transport. Please refer to the Transperth Website to help you make this decision.
Parking at the University Club
There is a range of parking options at the University Club. This year we are offering reserved parking in the car park adjacent to the Club (car park 3) at cost ($16.50/car for the whole day). There are only 90 bays available in this park, so these bays will only be available to the first 90 people to book them as part of their conference registration. Without prior booking, this car park is only available for 3 hours maximum. Your car will need to be moved after this time. If you chose to book one of these bays your name will be checked off by campus parking as you enter the car park and you will be provided with a blue ticket to be displayed on your dash.
Alternatively, car park #23 and Hacket Drive (see map) are available for “Park and Pay”. These parks are available at $1.30/hour. As you will be competing with the general public for bays in these parks please allow yourself plenty of time to find an available bay, pay and walk to the venue.
The other “Park and Pay” car parks on campus have a maximum 3 hour limit, after which time you need to move your car before repurchasing tickets.
Why not avoid parking altogether and take the bus to the venue? See the Transperth website for routes.
