Feral pigs targeted in Quindanning area.
3 July 2009
Greater control of feral pigs in the Quindanning area is expected with the establishment of a new farmer-based Declared Species Group.
Fourteen local farmers met last week and agreed to form the Quindanning Feral Pig Declared Species Group (QFPDSG), coordinated by Department of Agriculture and Food senior biosecurity officer Alex Stewart.
The group also elected a Chairperson, Vice Chairperson, Secretary and five committee members. In addition to his coordination role, Mr Stewart will also provide technical advice to the group.
Mr Stewart said by forming a Declared Species Group, matching funding would be available from the Department of Agriculture and Food to control feral pigs in the region.
“The funding, together with the benefits of working together as a coordinated group, will go a long way to reduce the impact of these declared feral pests,” Mr Stewart said.
“Working as a group is always much more effective than working as an individual landholder when it comes to the control of any feral species.”
Mr Stewart said over the next three weeks any other landholders in the Quindanning or surrounding districts interested in the issue would be invited to join the group before it officially started.
For further information on the benefits of joining the Quindanning Feral Pig Declared Species Group or to attend the next meeting, contact Nick Samson at Williams - Narrogin Landcare on 98851583 or nrmown@westnet.com.au .
The next meeting will be held at 7pm on Monday 20 July at the Williams Community Resource Centre.
