                          Manjimup careers day a success

                          29 June 2009

The 2008 South West Vocational and Employment (VET) Trainee of the Year Tyler Loud was a guest speaker at the recent Department of Agriculture and Food Manjimup Horticulture Research Institute careers day.

‘Local boy’ Tyler Loud is now a technical officer with the Department of Agriculture and Food and spoke to about 50 students from the Manjimup District High School, Manjimup Education Support and Harvey Agricultural College at the ‘Grow a career in agriculture’ day.

“I didn’t really like school but I did a traineeship with the department and really enjoyed it,” Mr Loud said.

“It spurred me on to finish my high school certificate and get a job here and work with some really great people. I’d encourage anyone to give it a go in agriculture.”

Mr Loud said finding out about different jobs at events like the research institute careers day and work experience was invaluable to any young person considering their career path.

“Any form of training or work experience can lead to opportunities later on in life that can assist with a career,” he said.

The careers day gave the students an opportunity to learn about various career paths in agriculture and developed links between students and department staff.

It included a bus tour of the research institute and many hands on activities, including participation in a low stress stock handling activity in the shearing shed, tasting apples and using microscopes.

For more information about future Department of Agriculture and Food career days contact your local department office.
