Libyan visitors to share agriculture knowledge

                          22 June 2009

A first group of 41 Libyan agriculture students has arrived in Perth to undertake a seven month course in English and agriculture in Western Australia.

The Department of Agriculture and Food is hosting the students under an agreement with the Libyan Economic Development Board.

The department has a long history of working with the Libyan government and is currently involved in establishing Rangeland Development Centres aimed at capacity building in rangeland management.

The student delegation is part of a complementary project to invest in the skills and knowledge of potential Libyan agricultural professionals, supported by the department’s AGWEST International group and Curtin University of Technology.

Department rangeland project director John Allen said the partnership had been extended to include training for young agricultural scientists and would improve the understanding of the technical and cultural differences between Libya and Australia.

“There are agricultural and climatic similarities between the southern rangelands in Western Australia and Libyan rangelands that present opportunities for the joint development of management systems,” Mr Allen said.

“It will also help Libya build capacity across a broad range of the agricultural industry and to develop opportunities to increase agricultural trade with Western Australia.”

The students are to study English at Curtin University’s Bentley campus and agricultural subjects at its Muresk campus, before commencing specialised agriculture training at the department’s regional centres. Regional TAFE colleges will provide ongoing English courses for the students.

The initiative is still looking for host families at Albany, Northam and Geraldton from September to early December. Host families will receive $80 per day per student to cover the cost of food and accommodation.
