Strong support for stockhandling training
19 June 2007
The Department of Agriculture and Food and industry body LiveCorp have teamed up to deliver a practical livestock handling course for all those involved in the live export chain.
LiveCorp Services manager Peter Stinson said that the course was designed to teach techniques that use animals’ natural behaviour to move and manage them.
“Using these techniques will ensure all livestock are handled safely and humanely throughout the export process,” Mr Stinson said.
“Correct animal handling not only reduces stress to the animal and their handler, but also improves productivity and welfare outcomes.
“LiveCorp is committed to ensuring that all participants in the livestock export process have the opportunity to learn these techniques and so has allocated $40,000 over the next two years to provide subsidised training for stevedores, feedlot operators, truck drivers, and owners.
“Other industry bodies have also recognised the importance of correct handling techniques with WA Livestock Transporters and Country Bulk Carriers Association president Grant Robins offering to fully subsidise four members to attend.
“In addition, course participants are eligible for a recognised competency, ‘Handling Animals Using Basic Techniques’, which can form part of a Certificate II in Agriculture.”
More than 60 participants have attended the four courses to date. The Department of Agriculture and Food co-ordinates course dates and enrolments, and intends to organise at least three more courses at major live export localities in WA this year.
Department Technical Officer (Animal Welfare) and course coordinator Charlotte McIntyre said that this year’s workshops had included livestock transporters for the first time.
“Workshop participants said they were pleased to have learned new skills that were easy to implement and would help them move stock faster, while at the same time reducing stress on the animals,” Ms McIntyre said.
The next courses will be held in Broome in July. For course details and enrolment inquiries, contact Charlotte McIntyre on 9892 8511 or charlotte.mcintyre@agric.wa.gov.au .
Stockhandling trainer Boyd Holden speaks to course participants at the most recent livestock handling course held in Baldivis in April.
