Popular Taste Nights to Cater for Central Wheatbelt farmers

                          8 June, 2009

Farmers in Jennacubbine and Wickepin are set for a tasty treat when Partners In Grain’s (PinG) popular ‘meet and eat meat’ nights roll into town next month.

A Beer and Beef night will be held on 16 July at the End of the Road Steakhouse at Jennacubbine and the following night 17 July the Wickepin’s Facey Group will host a Lamb and Lager night at the Wickepin Community Centre.

PinG co-ordinator Julianne Hill said the events followed the successful PinG Beef and Beer nights held in Perth in February and Ravensthorpe in April, both of which attracted large crowds.

“The events include a two-course meal matched to a diverse variety of four tasting-sized beers and presentations by industry experts,” she said.

“Edith Cowan University brewing lecturer Hugh Dunn will talk about how popular beers are made, while Department of Agriculture and Food crop agronomy research officer Blakely Paynter will discuss the malting process of barley.

“At the Wickepin event, Kulin farmers Sara and Keith Wilson will pass on some of the lessons they’ve learnt about producing Dorpers.”

Facey Group executive officer Felicity Astbury said the Wickepin event would focus on lamb rather than beef to reflect the region’s focus.

“The event will showcase commodities like lamb and barley products that are consumed on a daily basis. Sometimes that link between growing and then enjoying the final product can be lost when you’re going around the paddock,” Miss Astbury said.

Both events start at 6pm and cost $45 per person. Registrations are essential and must be made by Monday 6 July to Ms Hill on phone 98381997 or email jrhill@agric.wa.gov.au

PinG is a national project funded by the Grains Research and Development Corporation, with Diamond Sponsorship from ANZ Banking Group, supported by the Department of Agriculture and Food.

PinG aims to build the capacity of the WA Grains Industry by encouraging the participation of all those within the farm business unit through professional development.
