Winter workshop for Small Landholders
2 June 2009
The Department of Agriculture and Food, together with the Blackwood Valley Small Landholders Group, will host a winter workshop for small landholders in July.
The Achieve the Good Life Winter Workshop will compile a host of the department’s Small Landholder Information Service (SLIS) workshops, plus some additions, into one weekend event in Bridgetown
Experts across various fields will deliver practical advice on topics such as, climate change, conserving water, maintaining healthy soils, composting organic wastes, good biosecurity management and keeping your livestock healthy.
Sessions will also be held on controlling feral animals, pests and bushfire risks.
Participants will hear advice on what to expect from the Federal Government’s Emission Trading Scheme and field trips will round out the practical component of each day’s workshop,
SLIS manager Neil Guise said with a growing number of small landholders within rural communities, the department was keen for all rural property owners to not only understand what issues they may face, but how to make every hectare count.
“Many owners of small properties are looking for information on what challenges they may face in managing their property, and how to prepare for these,” he said.
“The weekend program brings together a host of expert presenters from the department, Landmark, private consultants and local specialists.
“Participants will be able to hear directly from the experts, as well as chose from a range of field visits covering topics including pastures, annual crops, livestock and farm forestry, and see practical demonstrations of good management ideas that may work for them.”
Mr Guise said whilst the Small Landholder Series events were very popular, many people had been unable to attend as many of the events as they would have liked.
“By teaming up with the Blackwood Valley Small Landholder Group we are pleased to be able to provide a comprehensive mix of topics all rolled into the weekend,” he said.
The workshop is being held from July 10 to 12 in Bridgetown.
The workshop is supported by Landmark and the South West Catchments Council.
