New cattle DVD a guide to identification and movement
Media release : 13th May 2009
A new DVD filmed in Western Australia’s south west provides cattle owners with a step-by-step guide to owning, identifying and moving cattle.
Produced by the Department of Agriculture and Food with wide industry support, Owning, Identifying and Moving Cattle in Western Australia explains the legal requirements of cattle owners, correct identification and how to comply with the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) and movement regulations.
WA Farmers president and NLIS Implementation Working Group chair Mike Norton said the WA cattle industry had requested a DVD to clarify cattle owners’ NLIS obligations.
“The DVD will be valuable as an educational tool for those who cannot attend training workshops and for use in schools,” Mr Norton said.
While of particular use to novice cattle owners, Mr Norton said the DVD would also assist more experienced producers to update the NLIS database, as current compliance levels for cattle movements between properties in WA were not acceptable.
“There is confusion among some cattle owners about what is required when moving cattle from one Property Identification Code (PIC) to another PIC,” he said.
“This DVD will increase awareness of the need for PIC to PIC transfers and show how to carry out these transfers on the database.”
Pastoralists and Graziers Association (PGA) meat section chair and NLIS Implementation Working Group member Tim D’Arcy also supports the introduction of the DVD, particularly to further educate cattle owners on the use of the NLIS database.
“Correct use of the database is vital for ensuring fast traceback in the event of an animal disease outbreak or residue incident. Fast traceback underpins the cattle industry’s quality assurance programs and gives international and domestic markets confidence in our product,” Mr D’Arcy said.
Both Mr Norton and Mr D’Arcy commended the strong level of industry cooperation in the making of the DVD.
“The NLIS Implementation Working Group would like to thank all those who participated in the DVD, particularly Harvey Agricultural College and local cattle owners and businesses, for contributing to this important learning tool,” Mr Norton said.
The DVD and booklet were produced by the department with funding assistance from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, delivered via Meat and Livestock Australia’s National Livestock Identification System extension program.
