Nuffield Scholar Guest Speaker At Regional Updates

                          Media release : 20th February 2009

Local grain growers can get the latest information on grains research and global market outlooks at the Narrogin-Lake Grace Department of Agriculture and Food’s 2009 Crop Updates.

Crop update seminars, which are free-of-charge, will be held at Hyden on March 10, Corrigin on March 11 and Narrogin on March 12.

Department district manager Keith Devenish said this year’s updates, supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation, provided local grain growers and agribusiness representatives with the opportunity to hear from high level researchers and analysts.

“This year’s guest speakers include New South Wales farmer and Nuffield scholar Murray Scholz and Rabobank’s New York-based grains and economics analyst Michael Whitehead,” he said.

“Mr Scholz has travelled the world as a Nuffield Scholar looking at weed management options, as well as what long term growing of herbicide tolerant genetically modified crops has done for weed management.

“Rabobank’s analyst Michael Whitehead, originally from a sheep and grain farm in western Victoria, will talk about the global economic conditions and how it might impact on Australian agriculture.”

Other speakers will cover important topics such as the performance of new barley, wheat and canola varieties, options in response to increased fertiliser prices, managing last year’s frosted paddocks and information about on-farm grain storage.

For more information on the Crop Update events contact coordinators Vanessa Stone in Lake Grace 9865 1205 about Hyden or Cindy Parsons 9881 0201 for Corrigin and Narrogin.
