Networking Rural, Remote and Regional Women across WA
Media release : 23rd February 2009
The Rural, Remote and Regional (RRR) Women’s Network Reference Group plans to further improve its communication tools to strengthen the network over the coming year.
The decision was made at the meeting of the group in Perth this month, organised to set the future direction and activities for the network.
RRR network executive officer Kerry Regan said members from throughout Western Australia attended the meeting.
“The RRR Network is in a unique position to provide a communication conduit across a plethora of groups and organisations, because its membership reaches across the whole of the State,” Ms Regan said.
“In the coming year we will take measures to further improve our RRR Network website, the web-based meeting room, and our emailed newsletter and magazine.
“The network encourages all women to contribute articles, photographs, stories and other information to provide a wide cross-sectional view of all communities in WA.”
Ms Regan said members of the reference group lived in regional areas and were well aware of the issues which impact on women and their families.
“The group brings together a broad range of interests, expertise, background and a strong networking capacity among women leaders,” she said.
“The reference group is also an important forum for issues and opportunities affecting women, their families and communities.”
The regional program director for ABC local radio Sarah Knight was a guest speaker at the Perth meeting.
Ms Regan said rural radio provided a critical communication service to RRR WA.
“The meeting provided an opportunity for the reference group to discuss how the ABC coordinates ‘harvest ban’ alerts, and it considered how these could be improved. The RRR Network is also keen to ensure that interesting and relevant programs are broadcast to regional WA,” Ms Regan said
During the Perth visit, members also took an opportunity to meet the Minister for Agriculture and Food Terry Redman.
“The reference group will continue to keep in touch with the State Government on policies and important issues affecting RRR women and their communities,” Ms Regan said.
“The Perth meeting also enabled members to attend the RIRDC Rural Women’s Award event, with the new RRR Network chair Louise House taking on the role of MC for the ceremony. More than 100 guests from agricultural industries, government and rural WA were at the awards.”
The RRR Network is jointly supported by the Department of Agriculture and Food and the Department of Local Government and Regional Development
