The Department of Agriculture and Food's Invasive Species Program is responsible for the management of biosecurity risks associated with serious noxious weeds (invasive plants) in Western Australia, by means of declared plants policies and regulations and the provision of research and technical advice on weed issues. Widespread common weeds of cropping are dealt with by the Agricultural Systems Research program..

The Invasive Species Program currently operates under the Agriculture and Related Resources Protection Act 1976 (ARRPA) and the Plant Diseases Act 1914. By late 2009 the Program will operate under the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007.

The invasive Species Program is responsible for:

                          • development of policy on declared plants in WA
                          • implementation of declared plant policy in WA through awareness raising activities, property inspections and enforcement of regulations
                          • coordination of WA inputs into national weed strategies
                          • contribution to the development of national weed management policy through the Australian Weeds Committee
                          • research into improved management techniques for declared plants in WA, including biological control research
                          • assisting regional communities to prioritise and effectively manage declared plant and other weed issues
                          • delivery of technical, planning and field operational services to industry where funds are provided for the eradication of serious production weeds eg skeleton weed, bedstraw
                          • carrying out surveillance for new weed incursions
                          • development and maintenance of early detection and rapid response capability to manage new weed incursions
                          • identification of neglected orchards to help prevent the establishment of exotic disease in the horticultural industry
                          • inspection and certification of agricultural machinery for import and export
                          • implementation of the State Weed Plan aimed at facilitating the management of weeds at all levels in WA
                          • response to sporadic requirements for management of serious outbreaks of endemic pests, eg Australian Plague Locusts.
