Food Industry Information
The program
The Buy West, Eat Best program will provide Western Australian consumers with the assurance that they are supporting the local food industry by purchasing safe, quality Western Australian food products that are made from Western Australian ingredients.
For Western Australian food producers and growers, participation in Buy West, Eat Best will represent the opportunity for you to:
- meet expressed customer demand for clearly labeled Western Australian products;
- differentiate your products from imported products
- leverage off an industry-wide scheme and campaign supported by Western Australian Government
Managed by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia, this voluntary program is an excellent opportunity to reinforce your presence in theWestern Australian consumer marketplace.
For the Western Australian consumer, the Buy West, Eat West brand will represent integrity, trust and fresh, local produce.
Criteria
Your company is eligible to use the Buy West, Eat Best logo if you produce or trade products that meet all of the following criteria:
Local Content
- For fresh foods, the product must be "grown, farmed or fished" in Western Australia; and
- For processed foods (all of the following):
All characterising ingredients must be grown, farmed or fished in Western Australia; and the goods must have been transformed and/or processed in Western Australia.
Safety and Quality
Food producers, manufacturers and retailers must be compliant with the Food Standards Code, ensuring the production of safe food. In addition, such entities must have a quality assurance program or quality protocols in place.
Registration
You will be required to register to use the logo and to be part of the Buy West, Eat Best program. Registration of users will ensure that products can be traced throughout the supply chain and that compliance with the program can be monitored.
Monitoring and Compliance
Monitoring and compliance of the Buy West, Eat Best program will be undertaken by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia. Processes will include an email and free phone hotline to take industry and consumer queries and random compliance checks undertaken at the regional and metro retail level. Any issues of non-compliance will be managed by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia.
Registration Process
Businesses can apply for Buy West, Eat Best by filling out the Application Form and providing the relevant supporting documentation. The annual registration fee is $200+GST.
On successful application to the program, businesses will need to sign a Licence Agreement to access the Buy West, Eat Best logo for application on packaging, product or promotional material.

Marketing support
Buy West, Eat Best is supported with a comprehensive consumer marketing campaign, driven by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia.
Paid advertising, promotions and publicity activities will promote the program to the Western Australian community. Key Western Australian retailers have also committed to supporting the program in-store and on catalogue, and leveraging opportunities with participating businesses are also encouraged.
