NLIS Cattle: WA Implementation Working Group

The WA NLIS Cattle Implementation Working Group is directing the program for the National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) in Western Australia. This group is chaired by cattle producer Mike Norton, and is made up of representatives from cattle industry stakeholder groups including WAFarmers, Pastoralists and Graziers Association, the Cattle Industry Residue Trust Fund, saleyard operators, abattoir operators, live exporters, breeders, lot feeders, livestock agents, livestock transporters, the WA Meat Industry Authority, Department of Health, the WA Quarantine Inspection Service and the Department of Agriculture & Food WA.

The Group meets regularly to consider operational policy and the practical implications of the NLIS and its implementation in Western Australia. The Working Group supports the introduction of NLIS as an effective 'lifetime' identification and tracing system. This will enable the industry to meet future market requirements and to help prepare for unwanted emergency animal disease responses.
