                          Application to Register a Brand

To legally use a brand, earmark, pig tattoo or Property Identification Code (PIC) in Western Australia, you need to apply to register a Brand. Pig Tattoo numbers are automatically allocated with each brand. Earmarks are allocated when the owner indicates they have animals that must be or may be identified with earmarks (ie: cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats, camelids). Property Identification Codes (PICs) enable you to sell cattle and sheep in Western Australia and are allocated when correct property details are submitted.

When applying for a new brand, you may nominate your preferred letter and number combination. You can view instructions for searching for brands that are available for allocation.

NOTE: Supply of branding equipment is the responsibility of the owner. Contact your rural supplier or a manufacturer to obtain prices and determine ordering procedures.

                          Application to Transfer a Brand

If the ownership of a Brand is to change (eg: you have sold your property and the new owner wants to take over the brand) or the Trading Name is to be amended (eg: you wish to change to a Company name or add another person to the Trading Name) the Brand needs to be transferred into the new Trading Name. All associated identifiers (ie: earmarks, pig tattoo and property identification codes (PICs)) are also transferred to the new owner. Please note that Brands are not automatically transferred by the sale of a property or by a Will.

                          Application to Cancel a Brand

If you no longer need to have a registered brand (ie: you no longer own livestock) you may apply to cancel your ownership. Associated identifiers (ie: pig tattoo, earmark and Property Identification Codes (PICs) will also be cancelled. Please note that in Western Australia if you own any livestock you must have a registered brand. Only cancel your brand if you no longer own livestock.

                          Property and/or Postal Address Update

If you purchase, lease or sell a property or part of a property, you need to advise the Registrar of Brands of the changes so your Property Identification Code (PIC) details can be amended accordingly. Your PIC enables you to sell cattle and sheep in Western Australia.

Your address details also need to be kept current so that you will receive all communications about your brand registration (including renewal notices).

Transaction Tag (tailtag or ear tag) Application

Currently, in Western Australia, all cattle being moved to an abattoir, a sale, a feedlot or bulking up depot prior to export overseas must display a transaction tag in the form of either a tailtag or ear tag. The tags are embossed with your Property Identification Code (PIC) which is used to identify the property of origin of the cattle in the event of a disease outbreak or discovery of chemical residues in meat. To order transaction tags, you need to complete a Transaction Tag Application form and forward it to The Chief Inspector of Stock. You must have a registered brand to obtain transaction tags.

Transaction Tailtags are ordered by the Brands Office and take two to three weeks for manufacture and delivery. There is no charge for tailtags. If you need to obtain the tailtags sooner, you may place an Urgent Order with your local Department of Agriculture Office. The tail tags will be printed and delivered within four working days. There is a fee for Urgent Orders which must be paid before the order can be placed.

Applications for Transaction Ear tags are approved by the Brands Office and the (signed) form returned to the producer who then orders and purchases the tags through their rural supplier or manufacturer. Please note that only approved tags can be used as transaction ear tags and the approval to purchase must be signed before the order is placed.

                          National Vendor Declarations (NVDs)

are now managed by Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA). The new national forms for cattle and sheep include a waybill. They can be ordered by phoning the MLA Hotline on 1800 683 111.

You will need to quote your Property Identification Code (PIC) when ordering the books. You can check the Brand Register to find your PIC (this is also used as your Tailtag number). Instructions for searching the Brand Register are available.

For more information on National Vendor Declarations see Meat and Livestock Australia: NVD and Waybill.

                          Livestock Waybills

All livestock (except horses) being transported in Western Australia must be accompanied by a livestock waybill. Waybills may be purchased from your local Department of Agriculture Office and from many Shire Offices. Postage fees are payable if you require the book to be posted to you. The National Vendor Declarations for Cattle and for Sheep include a waybill and should be purchased from MLA on 1800 683 111.

Please note that a waybill is not required if the livestock is accompanied by a 'Permit to Move' or a special permit (contact a Stock Inspector at your local Department of Agriculture Office) or an interstate Health Certificate.

For interstate movement applications and declarations see Livestock movement in Western Australia.
