Guide to searching the Western Australian brand register
Search for Livestock Registrations, Property Identification Codes (PICs) and Animal Owners
The Western Australian Brand Register is maintained by the Department of Agriculture and Food. The Register can be searched for the details of all Livestock Brands and Property Identification Codes (PICs) (the number used on cattle tailtags, NLIS approved cattle ear tags and National Vendor Declaration (NVD) forms) currently registered for use in WA.
Brands in Western Australia consist of two letters and a number (0-9) in any order. The letter 'I' is not used. The first letter in the combination may be a lazy letter, where the letter appears to be tipped 90 degrees to the left. Symbol Brands are not issued for use in WA.
Searches can be conducted on the Brand and its associated identifiers, on the trading name, the property name or on the PIC.
Brand Query Results
- Please note that query results will display the Brands in the Brand field as 4 characters. This is not the actual brand used.
· The first three characters always refer to the Brand itself. Eg. AB10 refers to AB1; 9DR0 refers to 9DR.
· The final number in this display indicates whether there is a lazy letter in the Brand and where it is located.
· 0 means there are no lazy letters. Eg: AB10 = AB1
· 1 means the letter in the first position is lazy. Eg: DR11 = lazyDR1
· 2 means the letter in the second position is lazy. Eg: 6LW2 = 6lazyLW
- The Brand in Full field in the Brand record also indicates whether there is a lazy letter and where it is located.
- Brands that have no owner details against them are available for issue.
Searching the Register
To Search by Brand
- Click on Search by Brand to open the Brand Enquiry Screen.
- Click into the Brand field and type in the whole or part of a Brand. The percentage sign (%) can be used in place of any unknown characters. All Brands containing the known characters will be returned, including those with a lazy letter. (a) Entering the two letters and the number combination of the Brand will return all records containing that particular combination.
(b) Entering the percentage sign (%) between the two letters will return a list of all Brands containing those letters.- If a list is returned, click onto the required Brand to get to the full Brand record.
To Search by Earmark
Earmark codes consist of nine characters (eg: 018B.107A). The fewer known characters entered in the search, the greater the list of records returned.
· Click on Search by Brand to open the Brand Enquiry Screen.
· Click into the Earmark field and type in the whole or part of an earmark code. The percentage sign (%) can be used in place of any unknown characters. Entering part of an earmark or using the percentage sign will return a single Brand or a list of Brands.
· If a list is returned, click onto the required Brand to get to the full Brand record.
· Diagrams of the earmark symbols for each code and positions used can be found on the Index of Registered Earmarks
To Search by Registration Number / Pig Tattoo or by Certificate Number
· Click on Search by Brand to open the Brand Enquiry Screen.
· Click into the relevant field and enter the registration / pig tattoo number or the certificate number.
To Search using the Property Identification Code
· Click on Search by PIC / Tailtag
· Click into the PIC field and type in either the whole or part of the PIC. If only part of the PIC is entered, the search will retrieve all records containing the combination entered and this could be quite a long list to scroll through.
· If a list is returned, click onto the required Brand to get to the full Brand record.
To Search using the Trading Name
· Click on Search by Trading Name
· Type in the Trading Name but don't narrow the search too much by providing too much detail. If Bloggs JR & MK is entered, the search will only retrieve exact matches from the data base. If the Brand is registered in the name of JR Bloggs solely, then the search will miss the record. It is better to simply type in Bloggs and retrieve all records and select from the list. The same applies if using a company name such as Blue Moon Grazing. Simply search on Blue Moon.
· The other fields can be searched in a similar manner. Searching on the City/Town, for example, will return all Brands that have that particular town in their postal address. (Please note that the Postal address of the Brand owner is not always the same as the address of the property associated with the Brand).
· More than one field can be used in a search. A query on Smith and Wagin will return all Brands that meet those criteria.
· If a list is returned, click onto the required Brand to get to the full Brand record.
To Search using a Property Name
· Click on Search by Property
· Click into the Property Name field.
· Type in the name of the property. Don't narrow your search too much by providing too much detail.
· More than one field can be used in a search. A query on the property and a shire will return all Brands that meet the specified criteria.
· This search will only be successful if the property name is recorded against the Brand in the database.
· If a list is returned, click onto the Brand you want to get to the full record
