MOU for Buy West Eat Best program to ensure integrity

                          Media release : 29th January 2009

The West Australian buy west, eat best food labelling program has received a boost with the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the Department of Agriculture and Food and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.

Department of Agriculture and Food director general Ian Longson said buy west, eat best identified locally produced food products for WA consumers using a unique green logo on food packaging.

“To use the logo, businesses must register and meet strict criteria which includes all fresh foods must have been 'grown, farmed or fished' in WA.

“Processed foods must have all main ingredients grown, farmed or fished in WA, and the goods must have been processed in this State.”

“The MOU assures the registered businesses of the integrity of the monitoring and compliance aspects of buy west, eat best.”

Currently there are 64 individual businesses registered, plus the two major grocery chains and 190 independent grocery retailers.

Mr Longson said under the agreement, the ACCC would refer buy west, eat best inquiries or complaints regarding licensing and related uses of the logo directly to the department in the first instance.

“The department will contact businesses about compliance and monitor their progress,” he said.

“If a business continues to contravene compliance requirements, the matter can then be referred to the ACCC for appropriate action.”

Mr Longson said the MOU also provided opportunities to further expand the buy west, eat best program.

“If a business is found to be using the buy west, eat best logo inappropriately, but can meet the program's criteria, the department can outline the benefits of being registered with the program and provide an opportunity to license the business,” he said.

More information on the buy west, eat best program can be found at www.buywesteatbest.wa.gov.au.
