No change to WA's NLIS sheep and goat requirements

                          Media release : 27th January 2009

National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) requirements for sheep and goats in Western Australia have not changed.

Department of Agriculture and Food veterinarian Roy Butler said the recent eastern states publicity campaign that reminds farmers that from January 1, 2009, sheep must carry an NLIS tag with the farmer’s property identification code (PIC) does not apply in WA.

“In WA, NLIS tags for sheep and goats carry the registered brand, not the PIC,” Dr Butler said.

“So whether you are applying year-of-birth tags (which are white in 2009) to lambs born on your farm or pink tags to sheep not born on your farm, the tags should be approved NLIS tags, with your registered brand embossed on them, not a PIC.”

Dr Butler said information about WA’s NLIS sheep and goats requirements was available on the department’s website at www.agric.wa.gov.au (search on ‘NLIS sheep and goats’).

“The website also has a list of contacts for NLIS officers in your region who can assist you with enquiries.

“A DVD and booklet produced by the department, Sheep and Goats: What You Need to Know, which details all of steps in identifying sheep and goats correctly, can also assist producers who are unsure of NLIS requirements.

For your free copy of the DVD, email snorton@agric.wa.gov.au or phone 9368 3367, or view the DVD online at www.agric.wa.gov.au (search on ‘sheep and goats’).
