Industrial Hemp (Cannabis sativa) is a potentially important crop for Western Australia. Hemp can be used for fibre from the stem or oil from the seeds. Items manufactured from it include textiles, paper, rope, fuel, oil, stockfeed and medicine. The industry in Western Australia is regulated under the Industrial Hemp Act of 2004 . For more information on Industrial Hemp read the paper under ‘useful downloads'.

                            Industrial Hemp Licence

The Industrial Hemp Act 2004 allows for suitable companies or individuals to obtain a licence to cultivate, harvest and/or process industrial hemp.
To apply for a licence use the application form below. Fees apply.

                            Sowing Industrial Hemp Crops

Licensees may sow crops of Industrial Hemp for fibre or seed production using approved seed sources. Once a crop has been sown a notification of sowing must be provided to the Registrar. The completed Notification of Sowing form (below) must be accompanied by an accurate map showing details of the sowing.

                            Seed Cleaning and Labelling

The Industrial Hemp Scheme includes a fully traceable seed system that requires sowing seed to be cleaned at Registered Seed Works, sampled officially and tested at AGWEST Plant Laboratories for germination, purity and weed seed content and be labelled with uniquely coded official bag labels.

For more information about this system contact the Registrar.
